Why do pool chemicals disappear so fast in an Austin summer?

“The Austin sun doesn’t just heat the water. It chews through your chemicals.”

If you feel like you’re adding chlorine constantly and still not winning, you’re not imagining it. Summer in Central Texas is brutal on pool chemicals. UV, heat, splash-out, and evaporation all work together to drain sanitizer fast.

Why the Chemicals Go Missing:

  1. UV Burnoff: The sun breaks down chlorine quickly if your stabilizer is too low.
  2. High Water Temperature: Warm water speeds up chemical demand and helps algae grow faster.
  3. Heavy Use: Swimmers bring in oils, sunscreen, and organics that consume sanitizer.
  4. Fresh Water Refills: Every refill changes the balance and can dilute the chemicals you just added.

What To Do About It:

  1. Test More Often: In summer, every 2-3 days is better than weekly.
  2. Protect Your Chlorine: Keep CYA in the right range so the sun doesn’t destroy it.
  3. Dose in the Evening: Evening additions give chemicals overnight to work before the sun shows up.
  4. Don’t Let Algae Get a Head Start: If chlorine is low for even a day or two, algae can bloom fast.

Austin Detail: In a heatwave, your pool can go from balanced to borderline in less than 48 hours. That’s why we tell people to stay ahead of the chemicals instead of reacting after the water turns cloudy.
